Queen of the Road, Part 1

tim-doreen-busMy book, QUEEN OF THE ROAD: The True Tale of 47 States, 22,000 Miles, 200 Shoes, 2 Cats, 1 Poodle, a Husband, and a Bus With a Will of Its Own, was recently published by Broadway Books, an imprint of Random House. It’s about a life-changing, year-long trip my husband and I took (with our sixty-pound dog, two querulous cats – and no agenda) in a 340-square-foot bus. It came about as a result of a common issue for boomers – the dreaded midlife crisis! This was a trip Tim really wanted to do. I had to be dragged kicking and screaming. (I’m sort of the Elizabeth Gilbert Anti-Christ that way.) Well, we’re both psychiatrists and I guess this proves Tim’s the better shrink.

I am, however, a former Princess from the Island of Long and shoe addict. Tim’s more of an outdoorsman. (I just don’t get the whole fresh air thing – I mean, fresh air, stale air, it’s all the same molecules.) Prior to the trip, he was also very Type A. (He’s definitely down to a more manageable B+ now.) tim-doreenAnd, just to toot my own horn for a second (sorry, I had to get in some bus humor), my book has been called "A Charles Kuralt-Albert Brooks-style romp where they meet up with nudists, robbers and more” by the New York Post which deemed it "Required Reading" (and who are we to argue?)

In a future dispatch, I will share with you how this whole thing started and some of the lessons we learned along the way. For now, please take a look at this video reenactment of what happened just 10 minutes after we headed out our very first day – The Meltdown Cruise.

I hope you enjoy it, and if you do, feel free to stop by my fabulous website, www.QueenOfTheRoadTheBook.com for more videos (including our visit to the nudist RV park – now I have your attention!), martini recipes (ditto!), fabulous reviews, the entire first chapter, podcasts, my blog, pictures, book tour appearances (bring your boa, ladies – and secure men, of course) and tons of other fun stuff. If you do stop by my website, please be sure to click on the “Share a Thought” link. I’d love to hear from you.

Doreen Orion grew up in Great Neck, NY (as her husband says, she's a “princess from the Island of Long," went to med school, became a psychiatrist, published a bestseller on stalking, and then got on board a converted bus with her husband for his midlife career break.
